Bavarian Meats was a special food shop called a delicatessen. It was located in Seattle, Washington, inside the famous Pike Place Market. The shop was known for its delicious German foods.

What Kind of Food Did They Serve?

Bavarian Meats offered many tasty German dishes. You could find different kinds of sausages like bratwurst, currywurst, and knackwurst. They also served schnitzel, which is a thin, fried piece of meat. Some schnitzel dishes came with sides like spätzle (soft egg noodles) and knödel (dumplings).

Their menu also had other popular items. These included Reuben sandwiches and bacon cured with whisky. A classic bratwurst meal came with sausage, sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), potatoes, and mustard.

One unique sandwich was called the Wrecking Ball. It was packed with pulled pork, ham, coleslaw, pickles, and barbecue sauce. Besides meals, Bavarian Meats also sold German products. These included elderflower syrup and popular Haribo gummy candies.

The Story of Bavarian Meats

Bavarian Meats was started in 1961 by a German immigrant named Max Hofstatter. People often called him "Grandpa Max." He began his sausage-making business right in Pike Place Market.

The shop was a family business. It mostly sold food for people to take home. But sometimes, they also offered places to eat inside. Bavarian Meats also supplied their products to other butchers and delicatessens.

A famous TV host, Andrew Zimmern, even visited the shop in 2017. He explores unique foods around the world.

Bavarian Meats closed its doors in 2020. The family shared a message saying they hoped to open again someday. They said, "it may take us a few extra months to find a home, however, find a home we will!"
