Beaker is a funny Muppet character from The Muppet Show. He is known as the shy and often unlucky assistant to Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. Beaker is named after a special glass container used in science labs, called a beaker.
Dr. Honeydew first presented the Muppet Labs segments by himself. Beaker joined him as his lab assistant in the second season. Beaker has big, bulging eyes and bright red hair. His mouth looks like a drawbridge and usually shows a frown.
The first person to perform and voice Beaker was Richard Hunt. After Hunt passed away in 1992, Steve Whitmire took over the role. Later, in 2017, David Rudman became the new performer for Beaker.
Beaker often finds himself in funny but difficult situations. He might get blown up, shocked by electricity, or even eaten by large monsters. These things usually happen because of Dr. Bunsen Honeydew's wild experiments. Beaker talks in a high-pitched, nervous squeak that sounds like "Mee-mee-mee mee". In books, this sound is often spelled "Meep". Sometimes, he can say a normal word, like "Bye-bye." Most of the time, his expressions help everyone understand what he means.

Beaker's Funny Adventures
Beaker quickly became a favorite with audiences. People felt bad for him but also loved to laugh at his funny troubles. Sometimes, Beaker even got a chance to get back at Dr. Honeydew. In one episode, Beaker accidentally made many copies of himself. He then spent the rest of the show chasing Dr. Honeydew around the theater.
In a TV special called A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa, Beaker had a lucky moment. He was testing a wish machine and wished for a famous model, Petra Němcová, to appear. When Dr. Honeydew told him to send her back, Beaker refused. He then used the machine to teleport away with her!
Beaker as a Singer
Beaker has also shown off his musical talents. He has sung famous songs like "Danny Boy" and "Carol of the Bells". He performed "Habanera" with the Swedish Chef and Animal. Beaker also sang "Feelings" and "Dust in the Wind" by himself.
He even sang "Ode to Joy" with his clones. These clones were accidentally made by Dr. Honeydew's copying machine. In the 2011 movie The Muppets, Beaker sang a funny a cappella version of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". He sang it with Sam the Eagle, Rowlf the Dog, and Link Hogthrob. Since the Muppets are for families, Beaker changed some of the song's words to "mee-mee-mee-mo."
Beaker in Cartoons
Beaker and Dr. Honeydew also appeared in the Muppet Babies cartoon series. In this show, Howie Mandel and Dave Coulier voiced Bunsen. Frank Welker made Beaker's squeaky meeps. Beaker was also performed by Kevin Clash in The Muppet Show Live. An animated Beaker was voiced by Richard Hunt in the short-lived Little Muppet Monsters series.
