Dr. Bunsen Honeydew is a funny Muppet character from The Muppet Show. He is a scientist who loves to invent new things. Dr. Honeydew is bald, has yellow skin, and wears a lab coat and glasses. He works at "Muppet Labs, where the future is being made today."
He doesn't have visible eyes, just clear glasses. This is a funny part of his character! His first name, Bunsen, comes from the Bunsen burner, a tool used in science labs. His last name, Honeydew, is like the honeydew melon because his head looks like one.

Meet Dr. Bunsen Honeydew
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew is known for his interesting experiments. He usually works with his very nervous assistant, Beaker. Beaker is a quiet Muppet with red hair. In the first season of The Muppet Show, Dr. Honeydew worked alone. But after that, Beaker joined him in all his wild science adventures.
Many of Dr. Honeydew's inventions don't quite work as planned. They often cause funny problems for Beaker! Sometimes, his glasses are a running gag. He might take them off to clean them or lift them up, even though he doesn't have visible eyes.
His Amazing Inventions
Dr. Honeydew has created many strange and wonderful inventions. Here are some of them:
- Edible paper clips (you can eat them!)
- Dish tenderizer
- Exploding hats
- A gorilla detector
- Hair-growing tonic
- A banana sharpener
- A robot politician (once played by Peter Ustinov)
- An electric nose warmer
He even tried to turn gold into cottage cheese! This was a funny twist on the old idea of alchemy, which was about turning lead into gold.
Bunsen and Beaker's Adventures
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew first appeared in The Muppet Show in 1976. He and Beaker have been in many Muppet movies and TV shows since then.
They had big roles in films like:
- The Muppet Movie (1979)
- The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
- Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
- Muppets from Space (1999)
- It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie (2002)
- The Muppets' Wizard of Oz (2005)
They also had smaller parts in The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa (2008). In The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), they were just in the background of a wedding scene.
In 2011, they appeared in the movie The Muppets. It seemed they were working at CERN, a real science lab with a giant machine called the Large Hadron Collider. They had a bigger role in the 2014 movie Muppets Most Wanted. In that film, they invented a "bomb-attracter vest."
They also appeared in the 2015 TV series The Muppets. There, they were in charge of props and special effects. Later, in Muppets Now, they hosted a show called "Muppet Labs Field Test."
Bunsen's Background
Bunsen went to a university called Carnegie Mellonhead. This name is a funny take on a real university, Carnegie Mellon University. He also worked as an assistant to another scientist, Dr. Pinhole Burns. Dr. Honeydew is the person who started Muppet Labs.
Both Dr. Honeydew and Beaker were also characters in the Muppet Babies animated series. Different actors voiced Bunsen in that show, including Howie Mandel and Dave Coulier. Beaker's squeaky sounds were made by Frank Welker.
In 2004, a poll was held in Britain. People voted for their favorite movie scientists. Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew won! They beat Mr. Spock by a lot, getting 33% of the votes. This shows how popular these two Muppet scientists are!
