Hanging Rock, also known as Bear's Paw, is a cool mountain in the North Carolina High Country. It's right next to the town of Seven Devils. The mountain is found on the border between Avery and Watauga counties.
This mountain stands tall at about 5,203 feet (1,586 meters) high. It helps create small streams that flow into bigger rivers. These rivers include the Elk River and the Watauga River. The Cherokee people also have a name for it: Yonah‑wayah.

Bear's Paw is a significant part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It offers amazing views and is home to many plants and animals. The mountain's unique shape gives it its interesting names.
A Special Protected Area
In 2008, a special place called Bear Paw State Natural Area was created on the mountain. The North Carolina General Assembly decided to protect this area. It's a bit like a park, but its main goal is to keep nature safe.
The High Country Conservancy helped get the first 350 acres (1.4 square kilometers) for the state. Now, the natural area covers about 384 acres (1.55 square kilometers). This protected land is just north of Grandfather Mountain State Park.
The natural area helps protect a part of the mountain called Hanging Rock Ridge. It also keeps the beginnings of Dutch Creek safe. Grandfather Mountain State Park helps manage and look after this important natural area.
