Mystery of the Falling Birds
Beebe became famous around the world in January 2011. More than 3,000 red-winged blackbirds and European starlings died and fell from the sky. This happened shortly before midnight on December 31, 2010.
Wildlife experts found that the birds fell over a small area in Beebe. No other dead birds were found outside this zone. The birds showed signs of being hurt. Some thought it might have been lightning, hail, or even fireworks.
The birds were sent to labs for tests. On January 5, the cause was confirmed. A resident had set off large fireworks. This scared the birds, causing them to fly into things and die.
On New Year's Eve 2011, the same thing happened again. Hundreds of blackbirds fell from the sky in Beebe. Local TV reported a "large mass" on their radar over the town.
