A Look at Bellmore's Past

Bellmore started as a farming and fishing area in 1643. It was first known as "Little Neck" and "New Bridge." English settlers from Connecticut came to the area in the mid-1600s.

One of the first settlers, Bradley Vogel, bought a large farm in 1655. Later, in 1676, Andres Smith gave land to his son, Jeremiah. Two small communities grew from these early settlements: Smithville (later Smithville South) and New Bridge. New Bridge was named after a bridge that connected areas south of Merrick Road.

In 1867, a railroad was built through the area. The railroad company decided to name their station "Bellmore." As the communities grew closer to the railroad, they started using the name Bellmore too. By 1920, Bellmore had about 3,000 people and stores along Bedford Avenue. The town officially became Bellmore in 1900 when the post office opened.

The Bellmore Memorial Library was started in 1948. It began in an old schoolhouse and is still the main library for Bellmore today.
