Belmont was first known as Green Plantation. Early settlers lived there before it officially became a town.

Belmont covers a total area of about 14.19 square miles (36.75 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 13.61 square miles (35.25 square kilometers). The rest, about 0.58 square miles (1.50 square kilometers), is water. The largest body of water is Tilden Pond, which is 357 acres.
Two main roads, SR 3 and SR 131, pass through the town. Belmont shares its borders with several other towns. To the north is Morrill. Belfast is to the east, and Northport is to the southeast. To the south is Lincolnville, and to the west is Searsmont.
