A Look at Searsmont's Past
Searsmont was first known as Quantabacook. It was located where several Native American trails met. The land was part of a large area bought by rich investors from Boston. One of these investors was named David Sears.
The first settlers arrived in 1804. They called their new home Fraternity Village. On February 5, 1814, the town officially became Searsmont. It was named after David Sears, who owned the land.
Searsmont was known for its good soil and many white pine trees. It also had strong water power from its rivers. By 1859, the town had 1,693 people. It was a busy place with 15 sawmills and two gristmills. Sawmills cut wood, and gristmills ground grain.
Later, in 1886, Searsmont had even more factories. There were five lumber mills and three cooperages, which made barrels. The town also had factories for window sashes, blinds, and pumps. Other businesses included four carriage factories, a tannery (for making leather), a shoe factory, and a factory that made coffins and bedsteads.
Today, Searsmont still has one lumber mill. This shows that the town continues its history of working with wood.
