Appleton is a small town in Knox County, Maine, in the United States. It is located about 15 miles away from Penobscot Bay. Nearby coastal towns include Camden and Rockland. Appleton is also about 30 miles east of Augusta, the state capital. In 2020, about 1,411 people lived there.

Appleton's History
Appleton became an official town on January 28, 1829. Before that, it was known as the Plantation of Appleton. A "plantation" was an early type of settlement. The town was named after Nathaniel Appleton. He was an important officer for over 20 years in a group called the "Twenty Associates." This group owned land in Appleton and other nearby towns like Camden, Hope, Liberty, and Montville.
