Berlin is a small town, called a borough, in Pennsylvania, United States. It is about 75 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. In 2020, about 2,004 people lived there. Berlin is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania area.
Every fall, the town celebrates the Whiskey Rebellion from the 1790s. More recently, people also remember Flight 93 which ended nearby in Shanksville in 2001. The Berlin Fife and Drum Corps is one of the oldest bands of its kind in North America.
You might know Berlin for Snyder of Berlin potato chips, which are made in town. Center Rock, Inc., a company that makes drilling equipment, is also located here. For a long time, farming and coal mining have been important jobs in the area.
It's important to know that this Berlin is not near East Berlin or New Berlin. East Berlin used to be called Berlin, but its name was changed to avoid confusion with this town.

History of Berlin
Early Settlers and Town Beginnings
People started settling in the Berlin area even before the American Revolutionary War. Many of these early settlers came from Germany. The surrounding area, called Brothersvalley Township, became an official area in 1771.
After the Revolutionary War, more soldiers came to live here. The town of Berlin was planned out in 1784. It officially became a borough on February 7, 1833.
The Whiskey Rebellion in Berlin
In June 1794, a disagreement happened at the Berlin Schoolhouse during the Whiskey Rebellion. This rebellion was a protest by farmers against a tax on whiskey. By September, an Irish immigrant named Robert Philson put up a "liberty pole" in the town square. He encouraged people to go against the new U.S. laws.
Federal troops arrived in October, and the protest ended. Philson and a preacher named Herman Husband were taken to Philadelphia for a trial. They were found not guilty. Governor Thomas Mifflin even set up his office in Dr. Christian Boerstler's house in Berlin during this time.
Famous Local Figures
A local lawyer named Jeremiah S. Black became a very important judge in Pennsylvania. He served as a Justice from 1851 to 1857 and was Chief Justice for some of that time. Later, he worked for the U.S. government. He helped solve land disputes in California as the United States Attorney General. He also served as the Secretary of State.
Geography of Berlin
Berlin is located at 39°55′17″N 78°57′00″W / 39.9213°N 78.9501°W. It is about 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Somerset. It is also about 63 miles (101 km) south-southwest of Altoona.
The town covers about 0.9 square miles (2.3 square kilometers) of land. Berlin is quite high up, at an elevation of 2,323 feet (708 meters). This makes it the second highest town in Pennsylvania, after Seven Springs.
