History of the Name

The name "Birchanger" has an interesting history. In the 12th century, the village was known by an Old English name: "Bircehangra." This name means "wooded slope growing with birch trees."

This old name still makes sense today. Parts of Birchanger Wood still exist in the area. These woods have many birch trees, just as the name suggests.
