What is Black Lake Like?

Black Lake is about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) long and 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) wide at its widest point. The main stream that flows into and out of the lake is called Black Creek. This creek enters the lake from the north and leaves from the south.

How Does Water Flow from Black Lake?

The water from Black Lake travels a long way! Black Creek flows from Black Lake into Moore Lake. From Moore Lake, the water continues into the Gull River. The Gull River then connects to the Kawartha Lakes, which are a chain of lakes. After that, the water flows into the Otonabee River and then the Trent River, finally reaching Lake Ontario. This means Black Lake is connected to one of the largest freshwater systems in the world!

Are There Islands in Black Lake?

Yes, there is one island in Black Lake that has a name: Casimir Island. It is privately owned.

Getting to Black Lake

You can reach Black Lake by using two private roads. These roads lead east from Ontario Highway 35, which is a main highway between the towns of Norland and Minden. There is a shared dock on the lake, and about 100 cottages are located around its shores.

Wildlife and Nature

At the southern end of Black Lake, where Black Creek flows out, there is a marshy area. This marsh is a great home for many different kinds of wildlife. You might spot animals like loons, deer, beavers, and herons living there. This area also provides a way for boats to access Moore Lake, which is on the eastern side of Highway 35. If you explore the south-eastern part of Black Lake, you will find several impressive cliffs.
