Blauvelt is a small community called a "hamlet" in New York. It's located about 20 miles northwest of New York City. Blauvelt is part of Orangetown in Rockland County, New York. It used to be known as Greenbush and then Blauveltville. In 2010, about 5,689 people lived here.
Blauvelt is found north of Tappan and west of Orangeburg. It's also east of Nauraushaun and Pearl River. To the south is Central Nyack.

What is Blauvelt's History?
The name "Blauvelt" comes from a Dutch family who settled here in the 1600s. The name likely means "blue-field" or "blue pasture fields." This might refer to the blue and yellow shields on the ships of Pieter Blauwveld, an early Dutch trader. The first Blauvelt in America was a farmer in New York in 1638.
Camp Bluefields and Blauvelt State Park
In 1909, New York State bought land in Blauvelt. They created Camp Bluefields, a large rifle range. It was used to train soldiers for the New York National Guard before World War I.
Later, the land was used by other groups like the YWCA and the U.S. Army. After World War II, it was left empty. Today, this land is a beautiful place called Blauvelt State Park.
Dinosaur Tracks Discovery
In 1972, something amazing was found in Blauvelt! Robert Salvia and Professor Dr. Paul Olson discovered several dinosaur tracks. These tracks were about 200 million years old!
The tracks were from a dinosaur called the coelophysis. Some of these tracks were sent to the New York State Museum to be studied and kept safe. These are believed to be the only dinosaur tracks ever found in New York State. They date back to the Triassic period.
Famous Music Studio
Blauvelt was home to the 914 Sound Studios in the 1970s. This was a famous music recording studio. Many albums were recorded here. For example, the title song of Bruce Springsteen's album Born to Run was recorded in Blauvelt in 1974.

Historical Homes and Markers
The Jacob J. Blauvelt house is a historic home. It was built in 1832 and stayed in the Blauvelt family until 1970. The Blauvelt family first came to America in 1638. Their family tree now has over 26,000 names!
- Johannes J. Blauvelt House - This house was built around 1755. It was used as an officers' club during World War II.
- Johannes Isaac Blauvelt House - Johannes (1743–1828) helped start the Greenbush Church. His son David began Rockland County's first tobacco farm here. The Blauvelt family lived in this Dutch farmhouse for 135 years.
- Blauvelt-Norris-Burr House - This Dutch home was built around 1790-1800. It has been owned by several families over the years. The current owner did a lot of restoration work in 2008 and 2009.
Greenbush Presbyterian Church
The Greenbush Presbyterian Church is on Western Highway. It was started in October 1812 by ten people, mostly Blauvelts. The first stone church was built in 1824 but burned down in 1835. A second church was built in 1837, but it also burned down in 1882. The church you see today was built in 1883 in the Gothic style. Its tower and bell were added in 1896. Many Blauvelt family members are buried in the church cemetery.
