How Blockade Runners Worked
Blockade runners were often the fastest ships available. They usually had light weapons, or none at all. They also had very little armor. Their missions were quite risky. Blockading fleets would often shoot at them. But if they succeeded, the rewards were huge. This could be money or important military supplies.
Blockade runners usually had excellent crews. These crews were skilled at avoiding enemy ships. Even though they acted like smugglers, blockade runners were often part of a country's navy. They were important for getting supplies to blockaded areas. Famous users of blockade runners include the Confederate States of America. They used them during the American Civil War. Germany also used them in both World War One and World War Two.
