Bloomfield Square, 1976

Bloomfield is a city in Iowa, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Davis County, Iowa. In 2020, about 2,682 people lived there.

History of Bloomfield

Bloomfield became an official city on January 3, 1855. A few years later, during the American Civil War, a small group of soldiers from the Confederate side raided the town. This happened on October 12, 1864. Sadly, three citizens lost their lives before the soldiers left and went back to Missouri.

Bloomfield is in the southeastern part of Iowa. It is close to the border with Missouri. The city covers about 2.28 square miles (5.90 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Yearly Events

  • The Davis County Fair happens every July. It takes place at the fairgrounds, which are west of Bloomfield.
  • The Davis County Country & Old Time Music Festival is a week-long event held every September at the fairgrounds.

Bloomfield and Davis County are also home to a large Amish community. Many Amish people live in nearby Drakesville.

The Davis County Courthouse is a very old and important building in Bloomfield. It was designed by architects Thomas J. Tolan & Son. The building was finished in 1879. It has a special bell made in New York and a clock made by the Seth Thomas Company. The clock still works today!

In 1924, a famous stunt performer named Henry "Dare-Devil" Roland tried to climb the courthouse. He fell and broke his hip. Eight years later, in 1932, he came back and successfully climbed to the top in just eleven minutes.

The Davis County Courthouse is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it is a special place that should be protected. The area around the courthouse, called the Bloomfield Square Historic District, was also added to the list in 1976.

  • The James B. Weaver House is a historic home built in 1865. It was the home of James Weaver until 1890. He was a very important politician who ran for president twice. This house was named a National Historic Landmark in 1975.

  • The William Findley House is another historic home. It is also known as the Davis County Historical Society Museum. Dr. William M. Findley was the first person to own this house. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

  • The Henry Wishard House is also called the Fenton House. Henry Wishard was a well-known businessman in Bloomfield. He is famous for helping to create the gasoline tax in the United States. This tax helps pay for building roads. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
