The Blue Wing Mountains are a mountain range found in the western part of Pershing County, Nevada, in the United States. This range is a cool natural feature that stretches for about 11 miles (18 km) from northeast to southwest. It's about 2.5 miles (4 km) wide and covers an area of 17 square miles (44 km²).

The highest point in the Blue Wing Mountains is a peak called Black Mountain, which stands tall at 6,617 feet (2,017 meters) above sea level.

What are the Blue Wing Mountains?

The Blue Wing Mountains are a typical example of mountains found in the Basin and Range Province. This is a huge area in the western United States where the land has been stretched and pulled apart over millions of years. This stretching created many long, parallel mountain ranges separated by flat valleys, like a giant wrinkled rug. The Blue Wing Mountains are one of these "wrinkles."

Where are they located?

These mountains are in a desert area of Nevada. They are surrounded by other interesting landforms:

  • To the northwest, there's a large, flat, dry lakebed called a "playa" in the wide Kumiva Valley.
  • West of the Kumiva Valley, you can see the Selenite Range.
  • To the southeast are the Nightingale Mountains.
  • Just south, across a narrow pass called Juniper Pass, are the Sahwave Mountains.
  • Further southeast is the Blue Wing Playa, which is part of the big Granite Springs Valley.
  • Beyond the Granite Springs Valley, you'll find the Trinity Range, with the town of Lovelock nearby.
  • The Seven Troughs Range is only about five miles (8 km) to the east of the Blue Wing Mountains.

This area is known for its wide-open spaces and unique desert landscapes.
