Bonita Canyon is a special place in southeastern Arizona. It's a type of valley with steep sides, almost like a box! This beautiful canyon is part of the Chiricahua Mountains. It sits high up, at about 5,360 feet (1,634 meters) above sea level. The canyon opens up towards the southwest into the Sulphur Springs Valley.

What Makes Bonita Canyon Special?
The walls of Bonita Canyon are topped with cool rock formations. These are made of volcanic tuff, which is rock formed from volcanic ash. A narrow valley, about a quarter of a mile wide, runs between these walls.
A stream called Bonita Creek flows through the northern part of this valley. It runs along the northern wall of the canyon. The valley floor is covered with many kinds of wild grasses. You can also find forests of Oak trees and Arizona cypress trees here.
Animals You Might See
Bonita Canyon is home to many different animals. You might spot large animals like mountain lions and bobcats. Black bears and mule deer also live here.
The canyon is a great place for birdwatching. Many different bird species fly through the area. You can also find various reptiles. Sometimes, even Jaguars have been seen in the canyon!
Visiting Bonita Canyon
Today, Bonita Canyon is part of the Chiricahua National Monument. This means it's a protected area that people can visit and explore. Inside the canyon, you'll find the Faraway Ranch Historic District. This is a historic site where you can learn about the past.
There is also a public campground in Bonita Canyon. This is a great spot for families and friends to camp and enjoy nature. The main office for the Chiricahua National Monument is located very close by. It's in the next canyon over, called Madrone Canyon, near the Faraway Ranch.
