Booborowie is a small place in South Australia. It's about 200 kilometers (124 miles) north of Adelaide, the state capital. This area is known for its farming and rich history.

Booborowie Station: A Big Farm

Booborowie was once a very large farm called a "station." In 1843, two brothers, Dr. William James Browne and Dr. John Harris Browne, started this huge farm. They bought a lot of land over the years, making their station very big.

What They Farmed

The Browne brothers raised special sheep called merino sheep, known for their fine wool. They also had shorthorn cattle. Their farming business grew so much that they bought other properties across South Australia. They even helped start a place called Katherine in the Northern Territory.

Moving Animals Across Australia

In 1878, the Browne brothers organized a massive journey. They moved a huge number of sheep and cattle from South Australia all the way to Katherine. This big animal drive was led by a man named Alfred Giles.

The Station Changes Hands

Later, parts of the Booborowie Station were sold. In 1897, a northern section was sold. The rest of the station was sold in 1910 and 1912. This allowed more people to settle and farm smaller pieces of land.

History of Booborowie Town

The town of Booborowie was officially created on March 29, 1877. It grew as a center for the surrounding farms.

What Booborowie Produces

Since it's a farming community, the main products from Booborowie are wool, wheat, lucerne (a type of plant used for animal feed), and canola (a crop used to make oil).

Where the Name Comes From

The town's name, Booborowie, comes from a nearby waterhole. This small waterhole is on Walton Palace Creek. The word "owie" means "waterhole" in the language of the local Ngadjuri people. You can see "owie" in other place names like Terowie.

The Camel Hump Wall

A special feature of the area is the "Camel Hump." This is a long wall made of dry stones, meaning no mortar was used to hold the stones together. It stretches for over 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Booborowie to Farrell Flat.

Historic Buildings to See

Booborowie has some important old buildings. The historic Booborowie Homestead and the old Booborowie Council Chambers are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means they are protected because of their historical value.

Booborowie Today

Today, Booborowie is a nice place for visitors. People come to enjoy the peaceful countryside and see the historic buildings. There are also camping facilities at the town oval. The town has a primary school, which opened in 1892, and a local store that also serves as a hardware store and post office.
