Bottineau is a city in North Dakota, United States. It is the main town in Bottineau County. The city is located about 10 miles south of the border with Canada. In 2020, about 2,194 people lived there.
Bottineau has a college called Dakota College at Bottineau. It's also known for fun places like the Bottineau Winter Park. A famous landmark is "Tommy Turtle," the world's largest turtle statue! This huge fiberglass turtle is 30 feet tall. It was built in 1978 to represent the nearby Turtle Mountains. The amazing International Peace Garden is also close by.
The city is home to Programmer's Broadcasting. This company owns and runs local radio stations like KBTO.

History of Bottineau
Bottineau was started in 1883. It was first called Oak Creek. It was a place where people could stop and rest during stagecoach trips. It was also a customs station.
The town's name changed to Bottineau in 1884. This was to honor Pierre Bottineau. He was a famous hunter and trapper who lived from about 1814 to 1895. He was also good at buying and selling land.
The town was first located about 1.5 miles north of where it is now. In 1887, the whole town was moved south. This happened because the Great Northern Railway was putting in new train tracks there.
In 1986, the widest tornado ever recorded in North Dakota hit near Bottineau. It was 1.14 miles wide! It destroyed a mobile home, but the pregnant woman inside was safe.
In 2012, a new building called Annie's House was built at Bottineau Winter Park. This park is about 10 miles north of Bottineau. Annie's House was the first ski center in North Dakota for children with disabilities and injured veterans. It was built to remember Ann Nicole Nelson. She was the only person from North Dakota who died in the September 11 attacks in New York City.

Bottineau is located on land that is all dry. There are no large bodies of water within the city limits. The city is about 1,637 feet above sea level.

Bottineau has four different seasons. The weather changes a lot throughout the year. Summers are usually warm, and sometimes hot. Winters are very cold. The coldest temperature ever recorded was -51°F (-46°C) on February 13, 2021.

The city's shopping area has many small local stores. There is also a large Walmart Supercenter store. This is quite unusual for a town of Bottineau's size. Bottineau also hosts the Bottineau County Fair. This is the oldest county fair in North Dakota!
