Brackenborough is a very small village, also known as a hamlet. It is located in the area called Brackenborough with Little Grimsby, within the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England.
You can find Brackenborough about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) north of the town of Louth. It sits in the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds, which is a special area known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This means its natural beauty is protected.
History of Brackenborough
Brackenborough has a long history. It was mentioned in the famous Domesday Book in 1086. This book was a huge survey ordered by William the Conqueror to record everything in England. Back then, Brackenborough had 15 households, meaning it was a small but active community.
Today, Brackenborough is considered a deserted medieval village. This means that the original village from the Middle Ages no longer exists in the same spot. You can still see signs of the old village, like earthworks, which are bumps and hollows in the ground. These show where old buildings or roads used to be.
Brackenborough Hall
The most important building in Brackenborough is Brackenborough Hall. This Hall is a very old and special building. It is a Grade II* listed building, which means it's recognized as a historically important place.
The Hall was built in the 1600s using red bricks. It has been changed and added to over the years. It probably replaced an even older building. Records from 1856 describe it as an "ancient moated farmhouse," suggesting it once had a ditch filled with water around it for protection.
The old Coach House at Brackenborough Hall has been changed into holiday apartments. This means people can now stay there for vacations.
The Folly
In the grounds of Brackenborough Hall, there is a unique building called a Folly. A folly is a building that looks like it has a purpose, but it's actually just for decoration. This folly was built in 1863 for a person named James Robson.
Interestingly, the folly was built using materials from a nearby church in Fotherby that was taken down in the same year. The folly was restored in 2022, so it looks great today!
