History of Brigham
Early Christian History
Brigham was an important place for early Christianity in Cumbria. The village's church, called St Bridget's, was first built in the Norman style. This means it was constructed by the Normans, who came to England in 1066.
The church is in the northern part of the village, known as Low Brigham. Inside, you can find pieces of old crosses and other carved stones. These stones are even older than the Norman church itself!
Village Features
In the middle of Brigham, there is a disused quarry. A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground. The main street, called High Brigham, runs above this quarry. A road named Stang Lonning cuts through the quarry.
Brigham's Railway Past
Brigham used to have its own railway station. This station was part of the Cockermouth and Workingington Railway. However, the railway closed down in 1966. There was even another station nearby, serving a small area called Broughton Cross.
HMS Brigham
A ship named HMS Brigham was named after the village. This ship was a special kind of minesweeper, used to clear dangerous mines from the sea. The ship's bell from HMS Brigham is now kept at St Bridget's Church of England primary school in the village. For many years, this bell was used as the school's fire alarm!
The Bounty Mutiny Connection
The family of Fletcher Christian is buried in the graveyard at St. Bridget's Church. Fletcher Christian was a famous mutineer from the ship called the Bounty. He was born and grew up in Eaglesfield, which is part of Brigham parish. He was also christened at St. Bridget's. Most people believe he is buried on Pitcairn Island, a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean. However, some people think he secretly came back to England.
Life in Brigham Today
School and Social Life
Brigham has its own school, St. Bridget's Church of England primary school. It has more than 100 students. The village no longer has a Post Office. However, there is still a social club where people can meet and relax.
Village Changes
Brigham used to have three local pubs, which are places where people gather. Now, most of these old pubs have been turned into houses. Only one pub remains open today. There are also newer housing areas in the village, called High Rigg and The Hill. These are located on the west and east sides of Brigham.
