Brinsmead is found about 8.5 kilometres (5.3 miles) north-west of the main city centre of Cairns. You can easily get there by road.

Brinsmead is located on the traditional lands of the Yidiny people, who are Aboriginal people. They have lived here for a very long time.
How Brinsmead Got Its Name
The suburb gets its name from a natural feature called the Brinsmead Gap. This gap is a space between the hills of the Whitfield Range. It was named after Horace George Brinsmead. He owned a sugar plantation nearby in Freshwater. Horace was one of the first people to offer tours in the area. He would guide groups to see the amazing Barron Falls. This was one of the first tourism activities in the region!

A school called Cairns Christian College first opened its doors in Brinsmead on January 25, 1983. Later, it changed its name to Freshwater Christian College.
