History of Bryn Mawr
Bryn Mawr got its name from a large piece of land in Wales. This land belonged to Rowland Ellis, a Welsh Quaker. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1686 to escape being treated badly for his religious beliefs.
Before 1869, the town was called Humphreysville. It was named after the Humphreys family, who were early settlers. The name changed when the Pennsylvania Railroad built its "Main Line" here. A railroad agent named William H. Wilson bought a lot of land for the railroad. He then renamed the town Bryn Mawr.
To attract visitors, the railroad built the Bryn Mawr Hotel in 1872. After a fire, a new, unique hotel was built in 1889. This building is now The Baldwin School. It is a historic place.
Bryn Mawr College opened in 1885. It started as a Quaker school but later became open to all religions. In 1893, the first hospital on the Main Line, Bryn Mawr Hospital, was built here.
