Buchs (pronounced buhks) is a town in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of St. Gallen. Buchs is special because it sits right on the border with Liechtenstein. In 2002, Buchs officially became known as a town.

History of Buchs

Early Beginnings

Buchs was first mentioned way back in the year 765. At that time, it was called de Pogio. This name appeared in an old document from a bishop named Tello.

Later, in 1213, the town was called Buchs. It was then owned by a powerful family known as the Counts of Werdenberg.

Changes Over Time

In 1404, the Werdenberg lands, including Buchs, were taken over by the Counts of Montfort. Then, in 1483, Count John Peter of Sax-Misox became the new owner.

A big change happened in 1517. The people of Glarus bought the area. They brought the Protestant Reformation to Buchs. This changed how people practiced their religion.

Modern History

From 1798 to 1803, Buchs was part of the short-lived Helvetic Republic. This was a time when France had a lot of influence in Switzerland. After that, Buchs joined the new Canton of St. Gallen.

Buchs covers an area of about 16 square kilometers (about 6 square miles). A large part of this land, almost 40%, is used for farming. About 28% is covered by forests.

More than 25% of the land has buildings or roads. The rest, about 7.5%, is made up of rivers or lakes.

Location and Importance

Buchs is located in the Werdenberg area. It is an important center for shopping, businesses, and services. It serves the upper Rhine valley in St. Gallen.

The town includes the main village of Buchs. It also has larger small communities called Räfis and Burgerau. There are also smaller settlements on the Buchserberg mountain.

As mentioned, Buchs is right on the border with Liechtenstein. It is very close to the town of Schaan in Liechtenstein.

Coat of Arms

The official symbol, or coat of arms, of Buchs is a green shield. In the middle, there is a silver stripe. On this stripe, there is a black altar cloth with gold rings and fringes.
