History of Burlington
Burlington was first planned in 1887. A man named Lowell set it up about a mile west of where it is today. But he picked the wrong spot and didn't own the land.
When the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad arrived in 1888, they built their train station at the current location of Burlington. So, everyone who had built homes and businesses in the "Old Burlington" moved them to the new, correct town site. Trains started running that same year.
About 12 miles northwest of Burlington, a place called "The Settlement" was created. It was settled by German immigrants from Russia. Many came from a town called Hoffnungstal. They built their farms and also churches, like Congregational and Lutheran ones.
Geography and Climate
Burlington is located on the High Plains in eastern Colorado. This area is mostly flat and open.
The city covers about 5.575 square kilometers (about 2.15 square miles) of land. There is no water within the city limits.
Burlington is important for travel because it's where Interstate 70 enters Colorado from Kansas. It's only about 12 miles (19 km) west of the Kansas state line.
Burlington's Climate
Burlington has a "cool semi-arid climate." This means it has hot, dry summers. Sometimes, there are heavy thunderstorms. Winters are cold and very dry.
