A Look at History
Early Inhabitants
The first people to live in the Busbanzá area came from the Eastern Llanos. They settled near a lake that used to be there. These early settlers were the ancestors of the Muisca of Busbanzá.
They were part of a group of communities called cacicazgos in the Iraka Valley. Other communities included Gámeza, Tobasía, Firavitoba, Iza, Pesca, Toca, Tota, Yaconí, Guaquira, and Monquirá.
Muisca Beliefs
The Muisca people believed in a god named Bochica. He was a bearded messenger god who taught them how to organize their society. He supposedly told the leaders of Busbanzá, Gámeza, Pesca, and Toca to choose a new ruler and priest. This leader would serve at the Sun Temple in Sogamoso. The choice would switch between leaders from Firavitoba and Tobasía.
Spanish Arrival and Founding
On September 4, 1537, Spanish conquistadores arrived in the Iraka Valley. They took control of the area. The modern town of Busbanzá was officially founded later, on January 5, 1602. The name Busbanzá comes from a local leader known as cacique Boazá.
