Former names CBSN (2014–2022)

The CBS News Streaming Network (once called CBSN) is an American streaming video news channel. It is run by the CBS News and Paramount Streaming parts of Paramount Global. This channel started on November 6, 2014. It shows live news all day, special original shows, and repeats of CBS News TV programs.

You can watch it on the CBS News website and its mobile app. It is also on apps for digital media players, on Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and other free streaming services.

Because CBSN was so popular, CBS started similar services for sports and entertainment news in 2018. These were CBS Sports HQ and ET Live. Later, CBS also began offering local streaming news for its TV stations.

About the CBS News Streaming Network

People first heard rumors about CBS News planning an online news service in 2013. CBS later said they were looking for "partners" for this service. Early ideas suggested it would be a live streaming channel. It would use videos from other CBS News shows and new online-only content. The New York Times compared it to an all-news radio station. It would mix pre-recorded videos with regular live news updates.

In May 2014, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves confirmed the company was working on the service. He called it an "exciting alternative to cable news." He also said that "there is so much information that we get every day that doesn’t fit into a 22-minute newscast."

In October 2014, reports said CBS was trademarking the name CBSN. The content would be in a casual newsroom setting. It would have a video player with a list of videos on the side. It would also connect with social media. On November 5, 2014, CBS announced the service would launch the next day. CBS News President David Rhodes said CBSN was not meant to compete with regular TV news. Instead, it was made for "connected devices" like smartphones and tablets.

The service also aimed at younger viewers. This included those who don't have much TV access or who don't pay for TV. Unlike other similar services, CBSN is free. You don't need to prove you have a TV subscription. Rhodes believed requiring a subscription would stop people from watching. CBSN uses commercials, just like a regular TV channel.

In September 2021, CBS said CBSN would change its name to CBS News. This was to use one name for all news, both on TV and online. The service also moved to a new studio. This studio was used by CBS This Morning before it became CBS Mornings.

The new name and studio started on January 24, 2022. New original shows also began. Some of these were based on segments from other CBS News programs. Examples include CBS Reports, The Dish, Eye on America, and Here Comes the Sun. While it is mostly called CBS News, CBS officially calls it the "CBS News Streaming Network."

Other Streaming Channels from CBS

Because CBSN was successful, CBS launched CBS Sports HQ on February 26, 2018. This service focuses on sports news. It offers sports headlines, game previews, highlights, and analysis. It uses information from CBS Sports and its online content.

ET Live started on October 31, 2018. This service covers entertainment and pop culture news. It is based on the TV show Entertainment Tonight. It shares entertainment headlines, celebrity interviews, and red carpet coverage. ET Live uses its own presenters. The main hosts of Entertainment Tonight also appear to promote stories. In July 2022, ET Live changed its name to Mixible. It still covers similar topics, but now includes content from other Paramount companies.

CBS News Local Streaming

After CBSN did well, CBS made local versions of CBSN. These are run by CBS Local Digital. They bring live local and national news to all CBS Television Stations 24/7. These services show the main CBSN national news. They also stream live local broadcasts and ongoing coverage from local stations. All these services make money from ads.

You can watch all CBSN Local services on Paramount+, CBS News, Pluto, and local station websites and apps. They are available everywhere, not just in their local areas.

Pluto TV started showing CBSN New York and CBSN Los Angeles on November 12, 2019. It also added ET Live and CBS Sports HQ. This happened as Pluto TV became part of CBS. On March 29, 2021, KTXA in Dallas–Fort Worth started showing CBSN Dallas-Ft. Worth on its second channel. This was the first time CBSN programming was shown over the air.

As of 2023, CBS Local has streaming services in 14 cities:

By early 2020, CBS planned to launch CBSN Local services in more cities. These would be in areas with a CBS-owned news station that did not yet have the streaming service.

The CBSN Local services also changed their names to CBS News. This happened at the same time as the national service's rebranding. Wendy McMahon, a CBS News and Stations co-president, said CBS planned to make 45,000 hours of local shows for these streams by the end of 2022. This includes high school sports coverage.

What You Can Watch on CBS News Streaming Network

CBSN uses the resources of CBS News and other CBS companies. It aims to create "exciting, highly competitive new services." These services meet how people like to watch content today. Viewers can watch CBSN live, or watch past segments whenever they want.

CBSN has live shows on weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to midnight Eastern Time (ET). It gets content from CBS News and other CBS shows. These include CBS Sports, CNET, Entertainment Tonight, and CBS TV stations. It shows a loop of the CBS Morning News from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. ET. It also has CBS News Mornings from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. ET. Segments from CBS Mornings and CBS Saturday Morning air at 8:00 a.m. ET.

CBSN also shows CBS Milestone segments. These are classic stories and interviews from CBS News shows. Both Face the Nation and CBS News Sunday Morning are shown on the channel. They air about 30 minutes after the live TV broadcast. Even though it is marketed as live, CBSN mostly uses hour-long "news wheels." These are updated all day. But recorded shows can be stopped for breaking news or live events. The local CBSN services work in a similar way.

CBSN airs live news for one hour on weekdays at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. ET. These are then added to the "news wheel." On December 4, 2017, CBSN started streaming the "Western Edition" of the CBS Evening News at 10:00 p.m. ET. This is right after its West Coast TV broadcast.

During breaking news, CBSN often shows the live feed from the local CBS station. This helps to give more coverage of the event. CBSN's resources are also used by CBS's regular news shows. For example, CBS Weekend News started in May 2016. It uses CBSN anchors and other CBS News reporters.

CBSN has original shows that you can't watch anywhere else. These include Red & Blue with Elaine Quijano and The Takeout with Major Garrett. Live reports often have more discussion with reporters. This gives more details than other news outlets. Interviews with experts and newsmakers are also part of the regular news. Other original shows include short documentaries like Reverb.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected CBSN's programming in early 2020. For two weeks in March 2020, CBSN did not make its usual shows. Instead, CBSN Boston was shown on the national service for much of the day. During this time, CBS stations in Boston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles made national CBSN newscasts.

As part of the rebranding to CBS News Streaming Network, CBS announced more shows. These include new versions of Person to Person and CBS Reports. Here Comes The Sun uses segments from Sunday Morning. The Uplift focuses on inspiring stories. There are also shows based on Eye on America and On the Road segments. Existing shows like Red & Blue now use more CBS News reporters. Content from 60 Minutes and 48 Hours is also shown in the evening.
