State Route 83 (SR 83) is a special road in California. It's also known as Euclid Avenue. This road is both a state highway and a city street. It starts in Chino Hills at State Route 71. From there, it goes north to Upland and ends at Interstate 10.
Euclid Avenue doesn't stop there! It keeps going north through Upland. It even reaches a community called San Antonio Heights. Parts of Euclid Avenue are very old and special. Some sections are even listed as historic places.
What is State Route 83?
Route 83 is a main road that runs north and south. It helps people travel through cities in western San Bernardino County. The road is called Euclid Avenue for its whole 14-mile (23 km) journey.
It starts in Chino Hills at State Route 71. Then, it goes through Chino, Ontario, and Upland. It officially ends at Interstate 10. But as a city street, it continues further north. It goes into San Antonio Heights. From there, you can even get to Mount Baldy.
North of State Route 60, Euclid Avenue is quite wide. It has six lanes for cars. There's also a beautiful landscaped area in the middle. This area is about 30 feet (9 meters) wide. In Ontario and Upland, the road passes through historic areas. You can see old homes and buildings from the late 1800s. South of State Route 60, the road changes. It becomes more like a country road. It narrows to two lanes. This part of the road used to be farmland.
SR 83 is an important part of California's road system. It's also part of the National Highway System. This system includes roads that are very important for the country's economy and travel.

A section of Euclid Avenue is very special. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it's a historic district. This part of the road runs from Philadelphia Street in Ontario to 24th Street in Upland.
This historic area includes a Madonna of the Trail monument. It also has other important historical items. The area covers about 203 acres.
Originally, SR 83 went further north in Upland. It reached State Route 210. But the state later gave control of that part of the road to local cities. So, it's no longer officially part of SR 83.
When State Route 210 was being planned, people in Upland had an idea. They wanted the new freeway to be built lower than the ground around it. This would help reduce noise and keep the area looking nice.
Also, people living near Euclid Avenue didn't want a full freeway exit. They worried it would bring too much traffic and noise. They wanted to protect the beauty and quiet of their street. So, there are no on-ramps or off-ramps where SR 83 meets SR 210. This means you can't get directly from one highway to the other. Instead, there are wide, green areas. These areas help keep the street quiet and beautiful.
Main Road Connections
Except where prefixed with a letter, postmiles were measured on the road as it was in 1964, based on the alignment that existed at the time, and do not necessarily reflect current mileage. R reflects a realignment in the route since then, M indicates a second realignment, L refers an overlap due to a correction or change, and T indicates postmiles classified as temporary (for a full list of prefixes, see the list of postmile definitions). Segments that remain unconstructed or have been relinquished to local control may be omitted. The entire route is in San Bernardino County.
