Cambridge is the main city, or county seat, of Isanti County. The city is built along the Rum River. It is also known for having the largest percentage of Swedish Americans among U.S. cities with over 5,000 people.

History of Cambridge

The city of Cambridge was started in the late 1800s. It grew along the railroad line that connected Minneapolis to Duluth. The first settlers were from New England. They were often called "Yankee" settlers. These people were descendants of English Puritans who came to New England a long time ago.

These early settlers also founded and named the nearby town of Princeton. Later, many people from Sweden and Germany moved to the areas around Cambridge. The city of Cambridge officially became a city in 1877.

In the early 1900s, Cambridge was a busy place. It had a factory that made potato starch. There was also a large flour mill and a mill for processing wool. The city had its own electric lights and telephone systems too. Passenger trains used to stop at the Cambridge station until 1985.

Geography of Cambridge

Cambridge covers a total area of about 7.68 square miles (20.11 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 7.46 square miles (19.37 square kilometers). The rest is water, which is about 0.22 square miles (0.74 square kilometers).

The Rum River flows right through the middle of Cambridge, from north to south. Many people enjoy activities like camping, canoeing, and fishing on the Rum River.

Climate in Cambridge

Cambridge has a climate with warm summers and cold winters. This is typical for the Upper Midwest region. The temperatures can be very different between summer and winter. Spring and fall seasons are usually quite short.

Winter is long and cold, but it gets cold later and warms up earlier than places further north in Minnesota. Summers are warm to hot and usually bring more rain than winter. June is the wettest month. Snowfall is common in winter, but the dry winters mean it's not as much as some other places.
