History of Cannon County
Cannon County was created on January 31, 1836. The state of Tennessee decided to form it. It was made from parts of other nearby counties. These included Rutherford, Smith, Wilson, and Warren counties. The county was named after Governor Newton Cannon. This area was known for farming and raising animals, like horses.

Cannon County covers a total area of about 266 square miles. Almost all of this area is land. Only a very tiny part, about 0.06 square miles, is water.
