Caribou Mountain is a cool mountain located right on the border between two countries! It sits partly in the United States and partly in Canada. The border here follows a special line called the "height of land." This means it's the highest point that separates different waterways.
The mountain's peak is found in Franklin County, Maine, which is in the U.S. It's about half a mile (0.5 mi or 0.8 km) inside Maine. The other part of the mountain, the southwest end of its top ridge, is in Le Granit Regional County Municipality, Québec, Canada.

Where the Water Goes
Mountains are like giant sponges that collect water. From Caribou Mountain, water flows in many different directions! This is called its drainage basin or watershed.
Water Flowing to the Atlantic Ocean
- The northwest side of Caribou Mountain sends its water into the West Branch of the Moose River.
- This water then joins the South Branch of the Moose River.
- Next, it flows into the main Moose River.
- Finally, all this water reaches the Kennebec River, which then empties into the Gulf of Maine. The Gulf of Maine is part of the huge Atlantic Ocean!
Water Flowing to the Saint Lawrence River
- The southwest end of Caribou Mountain has water that flows into a river called Rivière aux Araignées. This river is in Saint-Augustin-de-Woburn, Quebec, Canada.
- From there, the water goes into Lac aux Araignées, which is a lake.
- Then it moves into Lac Mégantic, another lake.
- After that, it flows into the Rivière Chaudière.
- Finally, the Rivière Chaudière joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River. The Saint Lawrence River is a very important waterway in Canada that also leads to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, which is also part of the Atlantic Ocean!
Other Water Paths
- The southeast side of Caribou Mountain drains into a stream called Number Six Brook.
- This brook also flows into the South Branch of the Moose River, eventually making its way to the Kennebec River and the Gulf of Maine.
It's pretty amazing how one mountain can send its water on so many different journeys!
