Carlos Joel Salcedo Hernández (born September 29, 1993) is a Mexican professional football player. People also call him El Titán. He plays as a centre-back for the Liga MX club Monterrey.

Carlos Salcedo started playing football in youth teams like Guadalajara in 2006. He later joined Tigres UANL and then Real Salt Lake. He began his professional career with Real Salt Lake in 2013. In 2015, he went back to Guadalajara. The next year, he moved to Europe. He played on loan for Fiorentina in Italy and Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. He then joined Eintracht Frankfurt permanently in 2018.

In January 2019, Carlos returned to Mexico. He joined Tigres UANL again. He helped them win the 2019 Clausura championship. He also helped them win the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League. In 2022, he went back to the Major League Soccer to play for Toronto FC. Later that year, he returned to Mexico to play for Juárez.

Carlos Salcedo has played for the Mexican national team since 2015. He has represented Mexico in many big tournaments. These include the 2015 Copa América, Copa América Centenario, and the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He also played in the 2016 Summer Olympics. He was part of the team for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Out in Football

Carlos Salcedo played for the youth teams of C.D. Guadalajara and Tigres UANL. In January 2012, he joined the academy of Major League Soccer (MLS) club Real Salt Lake in the United States. By August of that year, he started training with the main team. In January 2013, Salcedo signed a special "home grown player" contract with Real Salt Lake. This meant he had trained with their academy long enough.

Playing for Real Salt Lake

On May 4, 2013, Salcedo played his first professional MLS game for Real Salt Lake. He came in as a substitute in a 2–0 win against Vancouver Whitecaps. By the end of the 2013 season, he was a regular starter. He started 12 games that year.

In 2014, he didn't play as much. So, in November 2014, Salcedo decided to leave the team.

Returning to Guadalajara

On January 6, 2015, Salcedo went back to the Mexican team C.D. Guadalajara. He made his debut for the club in a 2–1 home win against Pumas UNAM. He played for 60 minutes in that game.

On March 1, he scored his first goal for Guadalajara. It was in a 3–0 home win against Monterrey. He played the whole game. At the end of his first season with Chivas, he was named one of the best players.

The next season, he helped Guadalajara win the Apertura 2015 Copa MX cup. They beat Club León 1–0. This win qualified them for the 2016 Supercopa MX, which they also won by beating Veracruz 2–0.

Loan to Fiorentina

On August 21, 2016, the Italian club ACF Fiorentina announced that Salcedo would join them on loan. They had an option to buy him later. Salcedo played his first game for Fiorentina on September 15. It was a 0–0 draw against PAOK in the Europa League. Ten days later, he played his first Serie A game against Milan, which also ended 0–0.

Loan to Eintracht Frankfurt

On June 13, 2017, Salcedo moved to the German team Eintracht Frankfurt. He joined them on an initial loan from Guadalajara. He got a shoulder injury during the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. So, his Bundesliga debut was on September 9. It was a 1–0 win for Eintracht Frankfurt against Borussia Mönchengladbach. He played the entire match.

In April 2018, Salcedo was one of three defenders nominated for the Bundesliga Team of the Season. On May 14, Eintracht Frankfurt announced they had signed Salcedo to a four-year contract. On May 19, Salcedo won the DFB-Pokal cup with Eintracht Frankfurt. They beat Bayern Munich 3–1 in the final.

Playing for Eintracht Frankfurt

On August 12, 2018, Salcedo played his first game of the season. Frankfurt lost 5–0 to Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup. On September 1, he got a high ankle sprain injury during a league match. This meant he would be out of action for some time. He returned to play on December 8 in a game against Hertha Berlin.

Joining Tigres UANL Again

On January 22, 2019, Tigres UANL announced they had signed Salcedo for four years. He chose to return to Mexico because of family reasons. Salcedo also said he didn't go back to C.D. Guadalajara because they only wanted him on loan. Two weeks after joining Tigres, Salcedo played his first Liga MX game. It was a 2–0 win against Veracruz.

On March 12, Salcedo scored his first goal for Tigres. It was in a 1–0 win against Houston Dynamo in the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals. Four days later, he scored his first league goal for Tigres. Tigres finished second in the CONCACAF Champions League Finals. But Salcedo was still named in the competition's Best XI. The next month, on May 26, Salcedo won the Clausura championship with Tigres. They beat León 1–0 in the finals.

On December 22, 2020, Tigres won the CONCACAF Champions League. They beat Los Angeles FC 2–1 in the final.

Moving to Toronto FC

On January 31, 2022, Salcedo returned to MLS. He signed with Toronto FC as a Designated Player. He played his first game on February 26 against FC Dallas. On July 12, 2022, Toronto and Salcedo agreed to end his contract. This allowed him to move back to Mexico for family reasons.

Later Career

After leaving Toronto, Salcedo joined Juárez.

On June 16, 2023, Cruz Azul signed Salcedo. On July 22, 2024, Cruz Azul and Salcedo decided to part ways. On August 4, Salcedo returned to Juárez.

On January 19, 2025, Monterrey announced they had signed Salcedo. However, on the same day, Salcedo got a serious injury during training.

International Career for Mexico

Youth Teams

Carlos Salcedo was chosen to play for the Mexico U21 team in 2014. He played in four matches as Mexico won the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.

In September 2015, Salcedo was selected for the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship. He was the team captain. He played in four matches, and Mexico won the tournament. This earned them a spot in the Summer Olympics.

On July 7, 2016, Salcedo was named to Mexico's squad for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He played in all three group stage matches. He scored a goal in a 5–1 win against Fiji. Mexico did not make it out of the group stage.

Senior National Team

Salcedo was called up to the senior national team in 2015. On April 15, 2015, he played his first game. It was a friendly match against the United States, which Mexico lost 0–2. He was part of the team for the 2015 Copa América. He played one game in that tournament.

On June 8, 2017, Salcedo was included in Mexico's squad for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. On June 21, during a group stage match, Salcedo had to leave the game early. He got a shoulder injury after a collision with a player from New Zealand. He could not play for the rest of the tournament.

On March 27, 2018, he got a fractured left collarbone during a friendly match. This put his spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup at risk. But Salcedo was still named in the final squad for the World Cup. He played in all the group stage matches. He also played in the round-of-16 loss against Brazil. After Mexico was out of the World Cup, Salcedo thought about leaving the national team for a bit due to personal reasons. He was called up again later but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury.

On June 6, 2019, Salcedo was called up for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In the quarter-final match against Costa Rica, the game went to a penalty shoot-out. Salcedo scored Mexico's winning penalty. Mexico went on to win the tournament, beating the United States 1–0 in the final. Salcedo was named in the competition's Best XI.

On September 30, 2020, he was the captain in a friendly match against Guatemala. Mexico won 3–0. On November 14, Salcedo scored his first goal for the national team. It was in a friendly match against South Korea, which Mexico won 3–2.

How Carlos Salcedo Plays

Carlos Salcedo is naturally a centre-back. This means he plays in the middle of the defense. But he can also play as a full-back. He has played on the right side for the Mexico national team. He also played on the left side when he was with Real Salt Lake.

He is known for being a good passer and a focused player. He likes to send long passes. He is also known for his well-timed slide tackles. He is strong in defense and good at winning aerial duels (headers). This makes him a very complete defender. People call him Titan because he is physically strong. He also recovers quickly from injuries and can play even when he's hurt.

He once said that playing in the MLS helped him improve his style. He felt that MLS games are more physical than in Mexico. Learning to play against a more direct style helped him combine his technique with his strength.

Personal Life

Carlos Salcedo comes from a family of footballers. His father, Carlos Salcedo Snr, played for Atlas F.C. in Mexico. His great-grandfather played for C.D. Guadalajara and won a league title in Mexico. His great-uncle, Hugo Salcedo, played soccer for the U.S. at the 1972 Olympic Games. Carlos's first-cousin, once removed, Jorge Salcedo, also played for four teams in MLS and for the U.S. national team.
