The association football (soccer) tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held in Brazil. It took place from August 3 to August 20, 2016.

This exciting event included both men's and women's teams. For the men's teams, players had to be born on or after January 1, 1993. This means it was mostly a tournament for younger players. However, for the women's teams, there was no age limit.

Games were played in six different cities across Brazil. These cities were Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, São Paulo, and Manaus.

This section lists all the countries that earned a spot in the Olympic football tournament.

Men's Teams

Sixteen men's teams qualified for the tournament. They earned their spots through different championships. For example, the top teams from the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualified. Other teams qualified from events like the Pacific Games and various continental championships.

Women's Teams

Twelve women's teams made it to the Olympics. They also qualified through different tournaments. For instance, the best European teams from the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup got in. Brazil qualified automatically as the host.

Men's Tournament

The men's tournament started with a group stage. Teams played against others in their group. The best teams then moved on to the knockout stage.
