Gutiérrez started his football journey, both as a young player and later as a professional, with the club Pachuca. During his five years there, he helped the team win the 2016 Clausura title and the 2016–17 CONCACAF Champions League. When he was just 20 years old, in the 2015–2016 season, he became the team's captain. In August 2018, he moved to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. There, he won two KNVB Cups and one Johan Cruyff Shield. He returned to Mexico in the 2023–24 season to play for Guadalajara.

Érick Gutiérrez has also played for various Mexican national youth teams. This includes the Under-20 team and the Under-23 team, which competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics. For the senior national team, he has represented Mexico in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup tournaments. He also helped Mexico win the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at Pachuca

Gutiérrez joined the Liga MX club Pachuca when he was 12 years old. He first played as a right-back, but later moved to the midfield. His first professional game was on October 26, 2013. It was a 0–0 draw against Cruz Azul. He played ten more games that season.

He became a regular starter in the 2014–15 Liga MX season. This was under the coach Diego Alonso. Gutiérrez scored his first goal in Liga MX on February 7, 2015. It was in a 1–1 draw against Toluca. In April 2016, at only 20 years old, Gutiérrez became Pachuca's captain. This happened after he had played just 70 league matches. At the end of the Clausura 2016 tournament, he was named one of the best players in the league. During his time at Pachuca, Gutiérrez played in 144 league games.

Playing in Europe with PSV

On August 29, 2018, Gutiérrez moved to the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. He signed a five-year contract and joined his Mexican teammate Hirving Lozano. He was given the number 25 jersey. On September 15, he played his first game for PSV against ADO. Just five minutes after coming into the game, Gutiérrez helped Lozano score a goal and then scored one himself. PSV won the game 7–0.

Three days later, he made his UEFA Champions League debut. He came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute against Barcelona. PSV lost that game 4–0. On October 30, he scored his first KNVB Cup goal. It was in the first minute of a match against RKC Waalwijk, but PSV ended up losing 3–2.

For the next season, he wore the number 15 jersey. In September, he got a hand injury while training with the national team. He returned in a match against PEC Zwolle, scoring the fourth goal in a 4–0 win.

During the 2020–21 season, Gutiérrez had two injuries. He only played 150 minutes in the entire Eredivisie season. In the following season, he became a more important player for PSV. He played more games and scored a goal in the KNVB Cup Final against Ajax.

On August 11, 2022, Gutiérrez signed a new contract with PSV until 2025. This happened just one day after he scored a goal in a big win against AS Monaco. That win helped PSV qualify for the Champions League Qualification game.

Playing for the Senior National Team

In 2015, Gutiérrez was on the first list of players for the Mexico senior national team for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, he did not make the final team. He eventually made his debut for the senior national team on October 11, 2016. It was a friendly game against Panama, which Mexico won 1–0.

On June 28, 2017, Gutiérrez was called up for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He played in all the group stage games. Mexico lost 1–0 to Jamaica in the semi-final. He was also part of the team for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He played in the second group stage match against Canada. He got a hamstring injury in that game, which kept him out for two weeks. Mexico went on to win the tournament, beating their rivals the United States. In a friendly game against the United States in September, he scored his first goal for the national team. Mexico won that game 3–0.

In October 2022, Gutiérrez was named in Mexico's first group of players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In November, he was officially included in the final 26-player team.

How Érick Gutiérrez Plays

Érick Gutiérrez is a left-footed box-to-box midfielder. This means he plays both offense and defense. He can also play as a deep-lying playmaker or in a holding role. He started his career as a defensive midfielder. But his coach at Pachuca, Diego Alonso, decided to play him in a more attacking position.

He is a very flexible, smart, and creative player. He is good at understanding the game and can make important passes. He has great positioning and connects plays using his skills and vision. He can stop opposing attacks, shoot from far away, and dribble the ball well. Even at a young age, he showed great calmness and maturity. This is why he was chosen as captain for both the Mexico U-20 team and his former club, Pachuca. Many people compare Gutiérrez to his fellow Mexican player Andrés Guardado.
