History of Carlyle
Early Settlement and First Businesses
Around 1811 or 1812, a man named John Hill built one of the first houses in what would become Carlyle. These houses were sometimes called "block" houses and were built to help protect settlers. John Hill also started Carlyle's first business: a ferry service to carry people and goods across the Kaskaskia River. A ferry is like a boat that transports things over water. He even had a small building by the river to collect tolls.
In 1816, Charles Slade and his two brothers arrived and bought John Hill's land and ferry business. Charles Slade also partnered with a man named Hubbard to open the first store in Carlyle in 1817. In 1818, the town lots were officially planned out. A post office was set up on March 10, 1819, but it was first called "Carlisle," possibly due to a mistake.
Becoming a County Seat
The area where Carlyle is located was settled before Illinois became a state in 1818. Illinois' first state capital was in Kaskaskia. In 1820, the state decided to move the capital. Carlyle almost became the new capital but lost by just one vote to Vandalia.
In 1824, Clinton County was created from parts of other counties. Charles Slade, who helped found Carlyle, gave 20 acres of his land so that Carlyle could become the county seat. This happened in July 1825. Carlyle was officially started in 1818 by Charles W. Slade, who named it after his grandmother's family. It became an official town on February 10, 1837, and a city on April 17, 1884.
Geography of Carlyle
Carlyle is located a bit east of the middle of Clinton County. The Kaskaskia River flows through the eastern part of the city. Just northeast of the city is the Carlyle Dam, which holds back the water to form Carlyle Lake. This lake is the biggest lake in Illinois that was made by people.
U.S. Route 50 goes through Carlyle. You can take it east for about 23 miles (37 km) to Salem or west for about 50 miles (80 km) to St. Louis. Illinois Route 127 goes north about 21 miles (34 km) to Greenville and south about 19 miles (31 km) to Nashville, Illinois.
The famous General Dean Suspension Bridge crosses the Kaskaskia River just north of where U.S. Route 50 crosses it now. This bridge was built in 1859 and was named after Major General William F. Dean in 1953.
Carlyle covers a total area of about 3.43 square miles (8.87 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land.
