Mayor of Las Vegas
First Election and Re-elections
On June 7, 2011, Carolyn Goodman was elected mayor of Las Vegas. She won with 60% of the votes. She officially took office on July 6, 2011.
She was re-elected in 2015 for her second term. In April 2019, she was re-elected for a third term. This was her final term as mayor because of term limits. Her term ended in 2024.
Meeting the President
On October 24, 2011, Mayor Goodman welcomed President Barack Obama to Las Vegas. Her husband, the former mayor, had been upset by some comments Obama made about Las Vegas earlier. Carolyn Goodman told the President that everything was "brand new and clean." She even gave him one of her special mayor chips as a gift.
Political Views
Carolyn Goodman identifies as an independent. This means she does not belong to a specific political party. She makes her decisions based on what she believes is best, rather than following a party's rules.
Bringing Sports to Las Vegas
During her time as mayor, Carolyn Goodman worked hard to bring professional sports teams to Las Vegas.
- The Vegas Golden Knights (NHL hockey team) started playing in 2017.
- The Las Vegas Raiders (NFL football team) moved to Las Vegas in 2020.
Even though these teams play in Paradise, Nevada, which is just outside Las Vegas city limits, Mayor Goodman helped make Las Vegas a major sports city. She also supported bringing a soccer team, the Las Vegas Lights FC, which began playing in 2018. She has also shown support for the Oakland Athletics baseball team to move to the city in the future.
COVID-19 Pandemic Comments
In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Goodman spoke in interviews about wanting to reopen Las Vegas's casinos and hotels. When asked how to keep people safe, she said that was up to the businesses.
She also suggested that Las Vegas could be a "control group" to see what would happen if casinos reopened. She even said, "We would love to be that placebo." Other leaders disagreed with her ideas. U.S. Representative Dina Titus said it was important to listen to scientists. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak stated he would not let Nevadans be used as a "control group" or "placebo." He said he would not put workers in a position where they had to choose between their job and their health.
