Cartoon Network (often called CN) is a fun TV channel that shows lots of animated cartoons. It's made for kids and teens, usually between 7 and 15 years old. This channel is part of AT&T's WarnerMedia company.

The channel first started on September 17, 1993. Back then, it was a bigger channel that served many countries in Europe, including the UK. Later, in 1999, Cartoon Network began to offer different languages for its shows. On October 15, 1999, the channel for the UK and Ireland became its own separate version.

Cartoon Network Shows and Schedule

Early Days of Cartoon Network

When Cartoon Network first launched, it mostly showed classic short cartoons. These included famous ones from Warner Bros. like Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, and also Tom and Jerry. After a few years, the channel started making its own original shows. Some of these popular early shows were The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory. Over time, these original Cartoon Network shows became the main focus of the channel.

Special Show Blocks

Cartoon Network has often grouped shows into special blocks. These were like mini-channels or themed sections within the main channel.

In September 2000, a block called Toonami started. It showed action-packed cartoons, especially Japanese anime like Dragonball Z, Tenchi Muyo, and Gundam Wing. Later, Toonami started showing other action cartoons too.

Around the same time, another block called Boomerang began. It showed classic cartoons that were no longer the main focus of Cartoon Network. Eventually, Boomerang became its own separate TV channel.

From 2012 to 2017, Cartoon Network had a popular block called "Meaty Mondays" (later "Mega Mondays"). This was when new episodes of popular shows would premiere every Monday evening. In December, it even changed to "Mince Pie Mondays" for Christmas specials! There was also a smaller block called "Funsize Fridays" in 2014, which played different shows every 15 minutes.

In March 2018, a new block called "New Fridays" launched. It showed new episodes of many different cartoons like Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, Ben 10, Teen Titans Go!, and Steven Universe. This block was similar to one in the United States. It ran for about four months before it was stopped.

Other Cartoon Network Channels

Boomerang

In May 2000, Cartoon Network launched Boomerang in the UK and Ireland. Many older, classic cartoons moved from Cartoon Network to Boomerang. At first, Boomerang broadcast for part of the day, but by October 2001, it became a 24-hour channel.

Cartoonito

Cartoonito started in May 2007. It's a channel specifically for younger children, like preschoolers. It replaced a channel called Cartoon Network Too. Cartoonito also became a 24-hour channel in January 2018.

Channels That Are No Longer On Air

CNX

CNX was a channel that ran in the UK and Ireland between 2002 and 2003. It was made for a male audience, showing cartoons for older kids and teens during the day, and shows for young adults in the evenings.

Toonami

Toonami launched as its own channel in September 2003. It focused on action programming, similar to the block it used to be. Toonami replaced the CNX channel. In May 2007, Toonami was replaced by Cartoon Network Too.

Cartoon Network Too

Cartoon Network Too started in April 2006. It showed many classic cartoons, especially those from Hanna-Barbera, like Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, and Wacky Races. It broadcast for part of the day until May 2007, when it became a 24-hour channel. In April 2014, Cartoon Network Too was replaced by Cartoon Network +1.

Extra Services

Cartoon Network +1

Cartoon Network +1 is a "timeshift" channel. This means it shows the exact same programs as Cartoon Network, but one hour later. It first launched in 1998, then was replaced by Cartoon Network Too, and then relaunched in April 2014.

Cartoon Network HD

In September 2011, Cartoon Network HD launched on Sky. This version of the channel shows programs in high definition, meaning the picture quality is much clearer and sharper. It also launched on Virgin Media in January 2013.

Virgin On Demand Service

Since April 2007, customers of Virgin Media can watch Cartoon Network shows whenever they want using the "On Demand" service. This lets them pause, rewind, and fast-forward programs.

Cartoon Network Studios Europe

Cartoon Network Studios Europe is a special studio located in London, England. It's like the European version of the Cartoon Network Studios in the USA. This studio was started in 2007.

The studio's first big show was The Amazing World of Gumball, which started in 2011. It was created by Ben Bocquelet. Cartoon Network Studios Europe has also helped make other shows like The Cramp Twins, Robotboy, and The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe.

Animated Shorts

The studio also creates short animated videos. These shorts sometimes become ideas for new TV shows. Some examples of these shorts include The Furry Pals and Mutant Moments. These videos used to be available on the Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe YouTube channel.
