Cass Browne (born September 27, 1971) is an English musician and writer. He is best known for being the drummer for the virtual band Gorillaz and for writing many of their stories. He has also been a member of several other bands, including Senseless Things and Delakota.

Early Music Days

Cass Browne started his music journey in the 1980s. He has played many different types of music, from rock to electronic sounds.

Starting with Senseless Things

In 1986, Cass joined a band called The Psychotics. They soon changed their name to Senseless Things. This band made four studio albums. They also had two songs that reached the top 20 in the UK music charts. The band toured a lot, playing shows across the UK, Europe, Japan, and the United States. Senseless Things broke up in 1995. Jamie Hewlett, who later helped create Gorillaz, was a big fan of Senseless Things. He even designed some of their album covers.

Forming Delakota

After Senseless Things, Cass Browne started a new band called Delakota. They toured for a few years. Delakota's first live show was even shown on a TV news program called Newsnight. In 1998, they released their album, One Love. Famous DJs and artists like Fatboy Slim and David Holmes made remixes of their songs. In 2022, a special digital version of the album came out. A music video for their song "C'mon Cincinnati" was made using old footage from Delakota's first concert. This concert happened 200 feet underground in the Hellfire Caves!

Other Early Work

Cass also played drums for Urge Overkill. This was to help promote their song "Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon". This song was famous from the movie Pulp Fiction. In 2002, Cass also worked with musician Damon Albarn. He was Damon's drummer for the album Mali Music.

Joining Gorillaz

Cass Browne became a very important part of the Gorillaz team in 2001. He stayed with them until 2012.

Playing Drums for Gorillaz

From 2001 to 2010, Cass played drums and used drum machines for Gorillaz. He worked on their first album, Gorillaz, and their popular album Demon Days. He played drums at all of Gorillaz' live concerts. You can see him playing on the Demon Days Live DVD, which was filmed at the Manchester Opera House.

In 2010, Cass went on The Escape to Plastic Beach Tour with Gorillaz. This tour started at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California. Many famous musicians joined the band on stage during this tour. These included Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, and De La Soul. Gorillaz also played at the Glastonbury Festival that year. The world tour took them to Europe, the U.S., China, Australia, and New Zealand. They also played at big festivals like Roskilde and Benicassim.

Writing for Gorillaz

Cass Browne was the main writer for all the Gorillaz characters' conversations. He wrote the band's autobiography, Rise of the Ogre, in 2006. He also wrote the dialogue for things like MEL's website tour in Phase One: Celebrity Take Down in 2002. He was the one who wrote all the interviews for magazines. This meant he wrote what Noodle, 2D, Russel, and Murdoc would say.

Cass also helped write and direct a fake documentary about Gorillaz in 2001. It was called "Charts of Darkness" and was shown on Channel 4. Later, MTV showed it around the world. Cass also wrote the script and directed the voices for the Gorillaz episode of MTV Cribs. In this episode, Murdoc Niccals showed viewers around the Gorillaz' Kong Studio. This video aired on December 26, 2005.

Collaborations and Films

While with Gorillaz, Cass worked on projects with big companies. These included 3 Mobile, Motorola, Microsoft, and Converse. The Converse project was special. It led to the Gorillaz song "DoYaThing". This song featured James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem and André 3000 from Outkast.

Cass also appears in the film Bananaz. This movie shows the journey of the Gorillaz band from 2001 to 2005. You can see him playing music in the studio and at live shows.

Other Music Projects

Cass Browne has been part of many other interesting music projects.

Penguin Cafe

From 2009 to 2019, Cass was a member of the band Penguin Cafe. This band was started by Arthur Jeffes. It continued the music of his father's group, the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Penguin Cafe played at many festivals and art events. They often visited Japan to perform.

Deadcuts

In 2016, Cass joined an East London band called Deadcuts. This band also included Mark Keds, who was the singer for Senseless Things. Cass has since taken a break from this group.

Circle 60

Cass Browne formed a band called Circle 60. He joined with Morgan Nicholls, who was also in Senseless Things. Des Murphy from Delakota and guitarist Ade Emsley were also part of the band. They released their first album, "Sawnoff ShotGold," in 2018.

Loup GarouX

In 2019, Cass started a new alternative rock band called Loup GarouX. He formed it with famous songwriter Ed Harcourt and Richard Jones from the band The Feeling. Their song "Sleep Forever" was used as the theme music for the ITV2 zombie TV show "Zomboat!". Their first official song, "I Know The Truth About You," was played on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music.

Loup GarouX played their first live show on February 21, 2020. They opened for the band Supergrass on their UK tour. This tour ended with two big shows at London’s Alexandra Palace. Loup GarouX plans to release their first album, "Strangerlands," in October 2021.
