A Look Back at Cedarville's History

How Cedarville Started

Cedarville began around 1864. It was first known as Deep Creek. The town was a helpful stopping point for wagon trains traveling through the area.

In 1867, two men named William Cressler and John Bonner set up a trading post. This was the first store in Modoc County. They also built the first road over Cedar Pass. This road connected Surprise Valley to Alturas and the rest of Modoc County.

The town got its first post office in 1869. Its current name, Cedarville, comes from a town in Ohio.

Growth of the Town

Before Modoc County was officially formed in 1874, Lake City was the main town in Surprise Valley. But by 1880, Cedarville had grown to be the largest town. It had about 220 people.

After Fort Bidwell, which was 20 miles (32 km) north, was no longer a military base, Cedarville became even more important. Its central spot and easy access to Cedar Pass made it the main place for people and businesses in the valley.

In 1913, a book described Cedarville as having about 500 people. The Laxague Lumber Company mill was in Cedarville. It provided jobs for many people, usually between 18 and 60 residents.

Important Historical Spots

Cedarville has two special places marked as California Historical Landmarks. These markers help us remember important events and people from the past.

Bonner Grade Landmark

About Six miles (9.7 km) west of Cedarville, you'll find Bonner Grade. This is California Historical Landmark number 15.

The sign says:

  • NO. 15 BONNER GRADE - The first road from Cedarville to Alturas followed the course of the present highway over Warner Mountains from Surprise Valley. It was named in honor of John H. Bonner, who was instrumental in securing the construction of the road over Bonner Grade in 1869.

This means John H. Bonner helped build the first road connecting Cedarville to Alturas in 1869. The road goes up a 6% slope between Bear Mountain and Payne Peak.

Cressler and Bonner Trading Post Landmark

Inside Cedarville Park, you can find California Historical Landmark number 14.

The sign says:

  • NO. 14 CRESSLER AND BONNER TRADING POST, 1865 - Cressler and Bonner started the first mercantile establishment in Modoc County here, in the first building erected in the town of Cedarville. They carried on a thriving business with emigrants en route to California and Oregon, and later with Surprise Valley settlers.

This landmark tells us that William Cressler and John Bonner opened the very first store in Modoc County right here in Cedarville in 1865. They sold goods to travelers heading to California and Oregon, and later to the people who settled in Surprise Valley.
