Century is a small town located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. In 2020, about 1,713 people lived there, which was a little more than in 2010. It's part of a larger area called the Pensacola Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History of Century

Century started in 1901 as a town built around a sawmill. It was named 'Century' because 1901 was the very first year of the 20th century! A post office has been open in Century since it began in 1901. The town officially became the Town of Century in 1945.

Where is Century Located?

Century is located in the Florida Panhandle, which is the northwestern part of Florida. You can find it at these coordinates: 30°58′40″N 87°15′41″W / 30.97778°N 87.26139°W / 30.97778; -87.26139.

The town covers about 8.7 square kilometers (3.3 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Century is in the western highlands of Florida. This area has hills made of sand, silt, and clay. These hills have deep creeks and rivers. Century is on the western edge of the Escambia River floodplain, which is a flat area next to the river that can flood. Most of the town is on higher ground, above the floodplain.

Roads and Travel

The roads in Century are not in a perfect grid pattern. This is because some land was granted by Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries, which created unique boundaries. Also, the town first grew around the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (now the CSX railway). Later, highways were built that followed the railway.

U.S. Route 29 (US 29) is an important highway for people traveling north from Escambia County. It helps connect Century to cities like Montgomery, Birmingham, and Atlanta. If you're coming from these major cities, Century is on the way to the beautiful coastal beaches at Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key in Florida.

Century is also where State Road 4 begins. This road goes east to other communities like Jay and Baker.

Natural Resources and Economy

Century has plenty of fresh water, which comes from underground sources.

In 1970, oil was found near Jay, a community close to Century. Oil was also discovered near Century itself, especially to its northeast. Oil became an important part of the local economy in the late 1900s.

Gravel and sand are dug up from pits in and around Century. These natural materials are important for building things in nearby cities like Pensacola and Mobile. They are used as aggregate in concrete.

Timber (wood from trees) and pulpwood (wood used to make paper) are other valuable natural products from the area. Nearby paper mills buy the cut pulpwood. There is also a timber processing industry about 10 miles south of Century.

What is Century's Climate Like?

The weather in Century has hot, humid summers and generally mild winters. This type of weather is known as a humid subtropical climate.
