Charles Lollar's Life and Work
Charles Lollar served in the United States Marine Corps from 1997 to 2003. During this time, he was sent to the Balkans region from March to October 1999. This was part of a mission called Operation Joint Endeavor.
After leaving active duty in 2003, he joined the Marine Corps reserves. In the reserves, he worked as an intelligence officer. Later, he became a general manager for a company called Cintas. As of 2014, he worked as a consultant for a government contractor.
Early Political Steps
Charles Lollar's first attempt at politics was in 2004. He ran for a spot on the school board in Gwinnett County, Georgia, but he did not win.
Later, Lollar moved to Maryland. He became the leader of the Republican Party in Charles County, Maryland. He wanted to run for Governor of Maryland in 2010. However, state rules required him to have been a registered voter in Maryland for five years, which he had not been.
Instead, he decided to run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He aimed to challenge the current Democratic representative, Steny Hoyer. Lollar won the Republican primary election in September 2010 with 58% of the votes. In the main election, Hoyer was re-elected with 64.3% of the votes, while Lollar received 34.6%.
Later Campaigns
After the 2010 election, Lollar became involved with several groups. He directed the Maryland chapter of Americans for Prosperity. He also led a group called New Day Maryland. He spoke at rallies supporting the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution (the right to own guns) and against high taxes. In 2012, he was chosen as a delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention.
On September 2, 2013, Lollar announced he would run for Governor of Maryland in the 2014 election. He raised money for his campaign. On February 24, 2014, he announced that Kenneth R. Timmerman would be his running mate. A running mate is the person who runs for Lieutenant Governor alongside the Governor candidate.
In the primary election on June 24, 2014, Lollar finished third. He received 15.5% of the votes. The winners of that primary were Larry Hogan and David R. Craig.
After this defeat, Lollar decided to run for a seat on the Charles County Board of Commissioners. He ran against the current Democratic Commissioner, Ken Robinson. Lollar spent more money on his campaign than Robinson. He promised to freeze taxes without cutting public services. However, he did not explain how he would do this. Lollar lost this election to Robinson. Robinson received 57% of the votes, and Lollar received 42.7%.
