Charles, Knight Vandenhove (born July 3, 1927, in Teuven – died January 22, 2019, in Liège) was a very important Belgian architect of the 20th century. His company, Charles Vandenhove et associés, was based in Liège, Belgium. He was well-known for his building designs in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Paris. His work spans from the 1950s all the way to the 2010s.

About Charles Vandenhove

Vandenhove finished his studies in 1945 at the Saint-Luc school in Liège. He then graduated in 1951 from the La Cambre architecture school in Brussels. He became famous in the 1970s for designing the Sart-Tilman university campus for the University of Liège. This campus is also known as the Liège Science Park.

He showed that modern building ideas could fit well with old city areas. He did this with his project called Cour Saint-Antoine in the center of Liège. Many of his homes have special half-round zinc roofs, French balconies, and Louvre shutters.

Working with Artists

In the 1980s and 1990s, Vandenhove worked with famous artists. These artists included Sol LeWitt, Daniel Buren, and Giulio Paolini. They helped design buildings like the academic hospital in Liège. They also worked on the Koninklijke Schouwburg in The Hague and the La Monnaie opera house in Brussels.

He even invited artists to help decorate his own home. This was a 16th-century city palace called Hôtel Torrentius in Liège.

Art Collection

Charles and his wife, Jeanne Vandenhove, loved art. In 2007, they loaned their art collection to the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. This collection had European art made after 1945.

Since 2012, the collection has been shown permanently in a new home in Ghent. It is looked after by the Stichting Charles Vandenhove (Charles Vandenhove Foundation).

Special Award

On March 19, 2016, the University of Liège gave Vandenhove a special award. He was named a doctor honoris causa, which means "honorary doctor."
