Chega (which means "Enough!" in Portuguese) is a political party in Portugal. It was started in 2019 by André Ventura. This party is known for its national conservative and right-wing populist ideas. This means it focuses on traditional values and often speaks directly to the people, saying it represents their views against the established system.
Chega first won one seat in the Assembly of the Republic (Portugal's parliament) in the 2019 election. Since then, the party has become much more popular. It gained a lot of support because it often takes a stand against the current political system. In the 2022 elections, it became the third most voted party, winning 12 seats. Its support grew even more in the 2024 elections, where it won 50 seats. This was more than four times the number of seats it had before!

What Chega Believes In
Chega sees itself as a party with strong nationalist and conservative roots. This means they value their nation's identity and traditions. They also believe in a strong justice system. They want the government to be less involved in how the economy works.
The party often talks about issues like crime. They strongly support the police forces in Portugal. They also focus on how taxpayers' money is used. They want to stop corruption at the top levels of government. They also aim to reduce too many people working in government jobs and prevent people from getting welfare money they don't deserve.
Chega wants to lower taxes. They think the current tax system takes too much money from people who work hard. They also want to reduce bureaucracy, which means fewer complicated rules and less paperwork. They believe this will help Portugal's economy grow.
The party supports life imprisonment for serious crimes. Some members also believe in the death penalty for very serious crimes like terrorism.
Chega says it strongly supports Western civilization. They want stronger border controls to manage who comes into the country. They also aim to reduce "mass and illegal immigration."
Chega's views on the European Union are seen as Eurosceptic. This means they are cautious about the EU and might want Portugal to have more control over its own laws.
Chega has close connections with Vox. This is a similar political party in neighboring Spain.
