The Confederate States Army was one of the two main armies that fought in the American Civil War. This article helps you understand how the Confederate forces were organized during the important Battle of Chickamauga. This battle took place in September 1863. Knowing how an army is set up, with its different groups and leaders, is called an "order of battle." It helps us see who was in charge of which soldiers and how they were positioned during the fight. The Union Army's setup for this battle is listed separately.
Understanding the Army's Structure
Armies are organized into different levels, like a team with captains, coaches, and different player groups. Here's how the Confederate Army was set up:
- Corps: A very large group of soldiers, like a whole team. It's led by a Lieutenant General (LTG) or Major General (MG).
- Division: A smaller part of a corps, like a major section of the team. It's led by a Major General (MG) or Brigadier General (BG).
- Brigade: A smaller group within a division, made up of several regiments. It's led by a Brigadier General (BG) or Colonel (Col).
- Regiment: The basic unit of soldiers, usually a few hundred to a thousand men. It's led by a Colonel (Col) or Lieutenant Colonel (Ltc).
- Battalion: A smaller group than a regiment.
- Battery: A unit of artillery (cannons).
Important Abbreviations
Here are some abbreviations you'll see in the lists below:
And for what happened to the commanders during the battle:
- w = wounded (injured)
- mw = mortally wounded (injured so badly they later died)
- k = killed (died in battle)
- c = captured (taken prisoner by the other side)
The Confederate Army on September 19, 1863
On the first day of the Battle of Chickamauga, the main Confederate force was the Army of Tennessee.
Gen Braxton Bragg was the overall commander of the Army of Tennessee. He had a small cavalry escort unit with him.
Polk's Corps
This large group of soldiers was led by LTG Leonidas Polk. He also had a few cavalry units for escort.
