Derek Keith Barbosa (born April 8, 1974 – died July 28, 2024), known as Chino XL, was an American rapper and actor. He released four solo music albums during his career. His album Ricanstruction: The Black Rosary (2012) won an award for Album of the Year in 2012.
Chino XL also acted in many movies and TV shows. He appeared on the TV series Reno 911! and CSI: Miami. He was in the movie Alex & Emma with Kate Hudson and Luke Wilson. He also acted in independent films like The Beat, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival.
Derek Barbosa was the nephew of Bernie Worrell, a musician from the famous group Parliament/Funkadelic. Chino XL was also a member of MENSA, a group for people with very high IQs.

Early Life
Derek Barbosa was born in The Bronx, New York. He grew up in East Orange, New Jersey. He was raised by his single mother.
Music Career
Chino XL started his music journey early. At 16, he signed with Rick Rubin's American Recordings label. This was after he helped start the music group Art of Origin.
His first album, Here to Save You All, came out in 1996. It was well-liked by critics. The song "Kreep" was played a lot on radio and MTV. It even stayed on the Billboard charts for 23 weeks.
Later, Chino XL signed with Warner Bros. Records. His second album, I Told You So, faced many delays. It was finally released in 2001 by Metro Records.
In 2006, he released his third album, Poison Pen. This album featured other rappers like Proof and Killah Priest.
In 2007, Chino XL joined the Universal Latino label Machete Music. He later released his fifth studio album, Ricanstruction: The Black Rosary, in 2012. This album included collaborations with artists like Immortal Technique and Tech N9ne. It won the 2012 HHUG Album of the Year award.
In 2014, he formed a hip hop supergroup called Verse 48. He worked with rappers Vakill, Copywrite, and Tame One. They started working on a new music project.
In 2020, he released an extended play (EP) called Chino vs. Balt with Balt Getty. In 2023, Chino XL released the album God’s Carpenter with Stu Bangas.
Death
Derek Barbosa passed away at his home on July 28, 2024. His family shared the sad news on his Instagram account.
