Chris Tomlinson's Athletic Journey
Early Life and Start in Athletics
Chris Tomlinson was born in Middlesbrough, England, on September 15, 1981. He started his athletics journey at a young age. When he was just 10 years old, Chris began competing for Middlesbrough AC. At first, he mostly ran in short races like the 100m and 200m.
He went to Nunthorpe Secondary School, where he set many records for long jump and triple jump. Later, he attended Prior Pursglove College. In his early teenage years, Chris decided to focus on the long jump.
Breaking Records and Competing Globally
Chris had a big moment in 2002. Just three months after breaking both his wrists in an accident, he jumped an amazing 8.27 meters! This jump broke the British long jump record that had stood for 34 years. On July 7, 2007, he jumped even further, reaching 8.29 meters in Germany.
Chris competed for the athletics club Newham and Essex Beagles. He won seven national titles in different age groups. This included a title for the triple jump indoors when he was under 20 years old in 2000.
In February 2008, Chris became the world's top long jumper of the year so far with a jump of 8.18 meters. He won a silver medal at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He also competed in the 2008 Olympic Games, but he didn't make it to the final.
In August 2009, another British athlete, Greg Rutherford, broke Chris's record by just 1 centimeter. Both Chris and Greg went on to compete in the final of the 2009 World Championships in Athletics.
Chris regained the British record in July 2011 with a fantastic jump of 8.35 meters in Paris. Greg Rutherford later equaled this distance in May 2012 and then broke it again in 2014.
Chris was a five-time British long jump champion. He won the British AAA Championships title in 2004 and the British Athletics Championships in 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2013. In 2010, the University of East London gave Chris an honorary doctorate, which is a special award.
