Christoph "Sumi" Sumann (born January 19, 1976) is a former Austrian biathlete. Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Sumann was a very successful athlete, winning several medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships.

Life and Career

Christoph Sumann started his sports journey with cross-country skiing when he was a child. Many biathletes begin this way. By the mid-1990s, he joined the junior ski team for Austria. He later moved up to the senior level. At that time, he was known as a very good sprinter.

Sumann began competing in biathlon in the year 2000. He then competed at the highest level of the sport for 11 seasons.

Early Successes

His first big win in the Biathlon World Cup happened in the 2002–03 season. He finished 15th overall in the World Cup that year. In the 2006–07 Biathlon World Cup, Sumann won a mass start race. He even led the mass start cup for most of the season. This was a big achievement for an Austrian biathlete. He eventually lost the cup to Ole Einar Bjørndalen, a famous biathlete.

Olympic Highlights

His best season was the 2009–10 Biathlon World Cup. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he won two silver medals. One was in the pursuit race, and the other was with his team in the relay race. He also earned a bronze medal in the mass start event. He finished second overall in the World Cup that season. He also won the individual cup title. This made him one of the top athletes of that year.

The 2010–11 Biathlon World Cup was a tough year for Sumann. He got sick in Östersund, Sweden, in December. He had to fight this illness throughout the season. However, he still managed to do well at the World Championships. He won a bronze medal in the 20 km individual race.

Sumann stopped competing in biathlon at the end of the 2013–14 season.

Personal Life

  • Christoph Sumann was coached by Gösweiner Reinhard at his club, Union Sportverein Frojach-Katsch.
