Chuck Cooper (born November 8, 1954) is a talented American actor. He is famous for his work in Broadway musicals and plays. In 1997, he won a special award called the Tony Award. He earned this award for his amazing performance as Memphis in the musical The Life.

Chuck Cooper's Acting Journey

Chuck Cooper started his Broadway career in 1983. His first show was a musical called Amen Corner, where he played Brother Boxer. After that, he often worked as an understudy. This means he learned the roles of other actors and was ready to step in if they couldn't perform. He was an understudy for shows like Someone Who'll Watch Over Me and Passion. He even took over the role of Adam in Someone Who'll Watch Over Me.

Chuck Cooper has played many different characters in popular shows. He was Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago. He also played two unique roles, The Bus and The Dryer, in Caroline, or Change. In Finian's Rainbow, he appeared as Bill Rawkins.

In 2015, Cooper starred as Thomas, a slave, in the new musical Amazing Grace. This musical tells the story of John Newton, who used to be a slave trader but later wrote the famous hymn "Amazing Grace".

More recently, in 2021, he returned to Broadway in the play Trouble in Mind. For his performance in this play, he was nominated for another Tony Award, this time for Best Featured Actor in a Play.

Chuck Cooper has three children from his first marriage: Eddie, Alex, and Lilli. Both his son Eddie and daughter Lilli have followed in his footsteps. They have performed on television and on stage, just like their dad!

In May 2009, Chuck Cooper married playwright Deborah Brevoort. They had been together for almost ten years before they got married in Carmel, New York.
