Ciarán Hinds (born 9 February 1953) is an actor from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is famous for his many roles in movies and on stage. Ciarán Hinds has been in popular films like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). He also appeared in Belfast (2021). For his role in Belfast, he was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA.
You might also know his deep voice from the animated movie Frozen (2013). He voiced Grand Pabbie, the Troll King, and returned for Frozen II (2019). He also played Steppenwolf in Justice League (2017) and its 2021 director's cut.
On TV, Ciarán Hinds played Julius Caesar in the series Rome. He was also Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones. He has performed with famous theater groups like the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2020, he was named one of Ireland's greatest film actors.

Early Life and Education
Ciarán Hinds was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 9 February 1953. He grew up in north Belfast. He was one of five children and the only son. His father, Gerry, was a doctor. His mother, Moya, was a schoolteacher and loved acting.
When he was young, Ciarán Hinds was an Irish dancer. He went to Holy Family Primary School and St Malachy's College. After school, he studied law at Queen's University Belfast. But he soon decided he wanted to act instead. He left Queen's and joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He finished his studies there in 1975.
Acting Career
Ciarán Hinds started his acting career on stage. His first professional role was in Cinderella in 1976. This was at the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre. He acted there often in the 1970s and 1980s. He also performed in Ireland with groups like the Abbey Theatre.
In 1987, he was chosen by Peter Brook for The Mahabharata. This was a six-hour play that traveled around the world. He also appeared in its movie version in 1989. In the early 1990s, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Stage Performances
In 1993, Ciarán Hinds played the main role in Richard III. This play was directed by Sam Mendes. Hinds became very well known for his role as Larry in the play Closer. He performed this play in London and on Broadway. In 1999, he won the Theatre World Award for his first performance in New York.
He continued to act on stage. In 2007, he was on Broadway in The Seafarer. In 2009, he played General Sergei Kotov in Burnt by the Sun. This was at London's National Theatre. He also appeared in The Birds in Dublin in 2009.
In 2012, he played Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway. In 2015, he was King Claudius in Hamlet in London. The next year, he was in The Crucible on Broadway.
Film and Television Roles
Ciarán Hinds first appeared in a movie in 1981. It was John Boorman's Excalibur. He played Captain Frederick Wentworth in Persuasion (1995). He was also in Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003). In 2004, he played Firmin in The Phantom of the Opera.
In 2005, he was Carl in Steven Spielberg's movie Munich. He also appeared in Miami Vice (2006). In Amazing Grace (2006), he played Sir Banastre Tarleton. This character was against ending the slave trade. He also appeared in There Will Be Blood (2007).
On television, Ciarán Hinds played Julius Caesar in the first season of Rome (2006). He won an award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The Mayor of Casterbridge (2004). He also played Edward Parker-Jones in Prime Suspect 3 (1993). He was Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre (1997).
In 2009, he starred in Above Suspicion. He returned for its sequels until 2012. He has also done voice work for audiobooks and radio. He narrated the Penguin Audiobook Ivanhoe.
In 2011, Ciarán Hinds played Aberforth, Albus Dumbledore's brother, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. This was the last Harry Potter movie. He also appeared in The Debt (2011). He played Roy Bland in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (2011).
In 2013, he was cast as Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones. He appeared in seasons 3, 4, and 5 of the show. In 2017, Hinds played the villain Steppenwolf in Justice League. He supported the release of the director's cut of the film. This version, Zack Snyder's Justice League, was released in 2021.
In 2021, Ciarán Hinds was in the TV drama Kin. He also starred in Kenneth Branagh's movie Belfast. For this role, he received great praise. He won the National Board of Review for Best Supporting Actor. He was also nominated for an Oscar.
In 2021, it was announced that Hinds would star in the comedy-drama series The Dry. In October 2021, he was cast in the thriller film In the Land of Saints and Sinners. He stars alongside Liam Neeson in this movie.
Personal Life
Ciarán Hinds lives in Paris with his wife, Hélène Patarot. She is a French-Vietnamese actress. They met in 1987 while working on the play The Mahabharata. Their daughter, Aoife Hinds, was born in London in 1991. Aoife is also an actress. She has appeared in shows like Derry Girls and Normal People.
