Location and Landscape
The town sits at the eastern base of a place called Fairview Mountain. The ground underneath the town is made of a type of rock called Conococheague limestone.
The Famous Spring
The town gets its name from a special spring. This spring is the only natural source of underground water in the area. A local stream called Tom's Run gets its water from this very clear spring.
Getting Around Clear Spring
Most people travel to and from Clear Spring by road. The town is connected by important highways.
Main Roads
- U.S. Route 40 is the main highway that goes right through the town. It serves as Clear Spring's main street. This road goes west towards Hancock and east towards Hagerstown.
- Maryland Route 68 is another state highway that serves the town. It starts in Clear Spring at U.S. Route 40 and heads east towards Williamsport.
Major Interstate Access
Just south of Clear Spring, Maryland Route 68 connects with Interstate 70. This is a very important highway for longer trips. I-70 goes east to Baltimore and west towards the southern parts of Pittsburgh.
